5 Tips To Optimize Your URL’s

SEO can be classified into two parts – On page SEO & Off page SEO. URL optimization is a part of on page SEO since you have to do the necessary changes in your site itself. URL optimization is very important if you aim at ranking higher in search engines. It’s believed that the URL’s are given more importance than the page title and that’s why you need to optimize your post URL.

Here are a few tips to optimize your blog’s URL’s:

1. Remove The Unnecessary Words

Before hitting the publish button, always make it a point to optimize your URL and remove the unnecessary words from it. What words are you supposed to remove in order to rank better? Let me explain it using an example:
Suppose if your post is titled “Google Chrome – The Best Browser For Bloggers”. By default your URL will be xyz.com/google-chrome-the-best-browser-for-bloggers
In order to rank better, I would suggest you to use  the following URL – xyz.com/google-chrome-best-browser-bloggers
Removing the unnecessary words like the, for, when and others helps you shorten the post URL and eventually rank better in Google.

2. Keep It Short

Unless you are targeting a perfect long tail keyword, it’s recommended to keep the post URL short. A shorter URL ranks better in search engines than the ones which are too long. A URL which has the important keywords and is short, ranks better!

3. Important Keywords First

Another thing is that search engines usually focus on first few words of your URL. That’s why you must make sure that the most important keywords are in the beginning of your URL. This increases the chance of ranking higher.

4. Don’t stuff your URL with keywords

Suppose if you are writing a post titled Google Chrome Setup, in your URL just use xyz.com/google-chrome-setup. Don’t add more keywords like xyz.com/google-chrome-setup-install
Stuffing your URL with keywords may work for a short time, but it’s not a long term method! I don’t recommend keyword stuffing neither in your title, nor in your description and not in the URL as well!

5. Proper Redirection

If by chance you used a wrong URL for any of your post and its already indexed in Google and if you want to change your URL, follow the above tips and make sure you redirect the old URL to the new one properly. Always use a 301 redirect. A 301 redirect will help you in changing the old URL with the new one easily. This will also ensure no loss of traffic and link juice.
